Chapter 10
![]() I need a Daddy
David and I made plans to meet at Casa Vega. As always it was very crowded. But the food is so good, that you don't mind waiting. Plus you can get drunk at the bar. An hour later we were seated and eating our chips and salsa.
" So how are things with you and Jeff. " David said, dipping his chip into the salsa.
" We're doing fine. Thanks. "
" That's good." he said this with a look on his face, as if disappointed.
" What." I said.
" What." He said.
" What's with the look?"
" I didn't give you a look. What are we going to get for our appetizer?" He's trying to throw me off the subject. Using food as his method was really smart of him. But I knew what he was up to.
" You DID give a 'look'. What's wrong."
" I just wanted to know how you and 'Daddy' were."
" What's THAT supposed to mean?"
" He's a lot older than you. You don't think that's weird?"
" Yeah I do. I know he's old. But I don't see why you need to judge him for it."
" I just think he....that he...." David was choosing his words carefully.
" You think he's what?" I said trying to rush David's thought process. I'm telling you, God gave him looks, but didn't quite finish his job when it came to David's brain.
" When you guys came over the other night, he just treated you weird."
" Weird how?"
" It was weird seeing how he treated you."
" What the fuck are you talking about. He didn't treat me badly." This conversation was starting to piss me off.
" He CUT your steak for you. You don't find that WEIRD?"
He did cut my steak for me at dinner. I didn't even realize till now. But nothing is wrong with that? Is there? He likes to take of me. NOTHING is wrong with that. Nothing.
Two days later I was with Jeff. We were shopping. Actually I was shopping and he was paying. At lunch he commented to the waitress that I drink to much soda, and how it makes me hyper. Dinner time came and went, walking to his car from the restaurant, he turned to me and zipped up my jacket for me. He said it was getting cold. I'm starting to see a patter here. But I didn't notice until stupid David mentioned it. Damn him and his crazy accurate observations. I hate him.
On the way to my apartment Jeff couldn't quite make the traffic light and stopped suddenly. The sudden stop caused me to lurch forward. But I was stopped by Jeff's outstretched arm. He stopped me from moving forward with his arm. I looked at him, and I noticed how old he was. Gray hair. Wrinkles around his eyes. I looked at his hands. I looked at mine.
Tonight I broke up with Jeff. I wasn't really depressed about it. I called David and told him the story. I was happy tonight. I was happy that I could call my best friend and tell him. I was happy that I have my friend back.
